But here I am talking about it again, on youtube, what do you know. Am I crazy to think this or is my opinion justified? Let me know!
I mean wow, this is a dream come true, something I, along with many other, have wanted for a very long time, and the fact is that Square are being genius about this because even if the game does everything wrong, people will still buy it. But it will disappoint me, so for the sake of you Square-Enix, but mostly because I want to talk about this with other fans, so please comment on what you think, and tell me if I'm wrong as well!

I'm not going to go in on specifics, because I know that there are a lot of different fans out there, some who want the same game untouched with just better graphics, and some who want to change a lot about the game to make it feel fresh again. I'm somewhere in the middle, I do want them to stick to the original game a lot, but there has to be changes, not only on a graphical level. But with change comes the inevitable fear of something going wrong. Tetsuya Nomura said in an interview that "We can't have these upgraded, beautiful 3D models of Cloud and
Barrett, still lining up in a row, jumping forward to attack an enemy,
then jumping back to wait for their next turn. That would be bizarre. Of
course there will likely be changes there." This is one of the things that scares me. Because I don't get why you can't have turn based combat, I mean, the series took a real dive once the turn based combat was scrapped. I get the logic behind the statement, I just hope they don't change too much of the battles, I don't want FF XIII or honestly even FF XV.

There is nothing wrong with a turn-based system of some sort, just because it's not the kind of game that people play now. I really hate that the games industry have abandoned the turn-based model. I played X-com: Enemy Unknown a while back and loved it, It's an amazing game, if you've never played it, please do. But what I was going to say is that it also had a turn-based system, and it worked in it's favour, it let me have control of all characters at once, and not just one, and that's the thing I think. Final Fantasy has always been an assemble story, and by only controlling one character, you shun the other characters to supporting cast instead of main, which I always saw the FF-games as. Sure, Cloud is the main protagonist, but everyone are important. So if you're going to change the battles, please make is so I can control everything and everyone, let me have control over the battles, not just choose some stuff and watch the battle turn into chaos.

Secondly, don't remove stuff, instead, add stuff. I don't want less games in the golden saucer I want more. I don't want less weapons, accessories, armour and materia, I want more. I don't want less characters... I don't want more either actually. I don't want less Limit Breaks, I want more! By the way, don't remove the limit breaks, what ever you do! I don't want less lore, less side quests or less villages, I want more! Seriously, I'm fine as long as they don't remove anything, but one can dream right?

Another thing that I'm kinda scared of is that Nomura will cheese up the dialogue, or rather make it extremely pretentious. I get that you need to redo the script, I want to see them redo the script, but make it good, please. The voice-over in the trailer is fine, I like it actually, I get that it's referring to the reunion in the game. But it's borderline that I don't get what they're talking about. Just don't mess this up... And hire good voice actors... And ship the collectors edition with some cake!

When Square released Final Fantasy VI on the Playstation, they remastered the music, they added real instrument, something they couldn't do in the SNES original. I want to see this in FFVII remake as well, THE SAME MUSIC, but shape it up a little. And if you need to add new music, get Nobuo Uematsu to do it!

Okay, lastly, and this is a big one. If you have never played FFVII, this section will be spoiler-full. I know that a lot of fans have been asking for this, but I beg of you, for the love of God almighty himself; don't bring back Aeris. This is something that FFVII did so good, the death of Aeris made little 12 years old me cry, I still tear up when I play it again. But it was also necessary, her death is what saves the world at the end, if you bring her back in some side-quest or whatever, first of all, you doom the world, second of all, YOU DOOM THE WORLD! But the worst thing is that when you bring a character back to life, you loose all stakes of the characters still alive being in any kind of danger. To go to the world of TV and films, The Marvel Cinematic Universe have done this, but most of all, Supernatural! I really liked that series up to season 6, but then they started dying and coming back to life, over and over and over and over and over again, meaning that if someone actually dies, I feel nothing. So whatever you do Nomura, let the dead be dead.

Another thing that people have been wanting is to have the last boss be challenging. And I'm not talking about the One-winged angel-boss, I'm talking about the one between just Cloud and Sephiroth. I personally loved this battle, but people doesn't get the meaning with it. It's a battle to show that Cloud is now stronger than the man he looked up to, the man he felt betrayed by, the man who represented all the things old, that he had to lie about, a reminder of the man Cloud was before, someone he rather forget. For me, just make the last battle the same, just let us chose attack, then see Cloud drive his sword right through Sephiroth.

The end, done, boom.

Okay, that's my two cents, let me know what you thought about that, please discuss, tell me your dream for the FFVII remake, tell me if I'm wrong so we can discuss that! Bye!BigAssAnvilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13976946938262983111noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-457201608712998951.post-9877596383755170292015-05-18T12:00:00.000+02:002015-05-18T12:00:01.719+02:00Why can't I bring myself to play The Witcher? So tomorrow is the day when the long awaited third instalment of the popular Witcher- series, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. This is probably one of the most longed for games of the entire 2015, for some people, and I can really understand why. The grand world and the great script and story makes this a game that is in many aspects, ahead of its time. So why can't I keep playing it?

I've always had a very special relationship with The Witcher. I played the first game a couple of times, times that were far apart from each other, always starting over, because I wanted to experience it again, but I never got further than out of the castle before I stopped playing. It is odd, because I could never bring myself to play it again, every time I thought about it I just felt nah, I don't want to play that right now. The same thing happened with the second game, but then I stopped playing because it got a bit to hard to keep track of all the things you could do in combat, knives, traps, dodge parry, counter, oils, potions and sticking fingers up bums! There is a tutorial thankfully, and I have recently begun playing Assassins of Kings again, and I know it's hard and I don't mind, I love the story and the characters. I love this game, but I still had the same experience with this game, nah, not today, I don't feel like it.

It could have something to do with t he fact that The Witcher just isn't a game that you can just pick up and play, it will take up a far amount of time from your day. This means that The Witcher becomes very much a project, not just a fun game. And before you say anything, no I don't thing that is necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes I like a project, something I can really sink my teeth in, that I have to put a fair amount of time into in one sitting to enjoy. But it is a risky gamble for someone who works a lot, meaning that The Witcher isn't a game I would play on a day that I'm working, or when I have something else planed. Maybe on a free day, but even then I feel like I need to be in the right mindset.
I wrote about this two week ago too, the fact that games have very much become hard to start up. In the NES-days the "just pick up and play" was what made consoles different from computers. But now I feel like consoles just tries to be PC, but they never will be as strong, and I don't think they should be. But many games do a similar thing, where it can take half an hour of more before you get to play the actual game. I think that Nintendo is the only company who has managed to pull this of, even having the screen on your controller show the games so you don't have to go to the home menu when your start the Wii U, and can go straight to playing the game. I'm gonna say it, and maybe I will get a lot of hate for this, and I do think that the Wii U has a lot of flaws, but it remembers that it's a gaming console and not a media beast, like the PS4 or the Xone. I might do a comparison of the three one day but I just remembered, i was supposed to talk about The Witcher!
I read a review of The Wild Hunt and one thing that worried me was something that most people might see as a good thing, but I just really get this pit in my stomach. Every choice has a consequence, I love this, but the review stated that every side-quest had a twist, and you might get the feeling that you probably shouldn't have bothered with that which isn't your business. This makes me think of a thing that I really hated in the Game of Thrones game from Telltales. I talked about this in one of my Let's Filosoplay videos, and I'm going to put out a SPOILER ALERT here. In the first episode the game does something that the book and the series have done, it makes you feel like every character is in danger, by killing of one of the playable characters, and makes you feel like it's you fault. After that I just couldn't keep playing, because to fear for a character in the TV-series is one thing, and it can get pretty tense *cough*RedWedding*cough*. Then realize that the same tension is on you throughout the entire game, and it's worse because you're responsible and invest in the character you're playing. I just couldn't keep playing, it was too much for me, and yeah call me a wimp for it, but I mean, that is at the same time what made the game great and unique, but at the same time, it's what made me stop playing.

I hope that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt won't feel like this, because all in all, it's a game that I want to love, because of the world and the characters. I'm getting really pumped to play the second game again now, maybe I should begin a project today! Are you pumped for Wild Hunt? We'll see if a review finds its way onto this sight in the future.

The beautiful scenery of Destiny

I've never really liked MMO's. So I'm not even sure why I picked up Destiny. Well, that's not entirely true, I picked it up because I really like Halo, and I played Destiny at a friends and kind of liked the concept of it. The part I played was where I teamed up with two other players to take on a number of enemies and at the end one really big and bad one. It felt kinda Halo-ish, I really liked that and to be honest, there is nothing wrong with the gameplay as it is. I loved the tense and kinda hard boss-fight, where you always had to weight offence and defence.

Okay, enough praise, because I later picked up Destiny, and played it for a while, but has as of now laid it to rest. Unfortunately it suffers from the classic MMO-problems, something that you who reads this might actually like, but that I just can't stand. The first thing is the horrible try to be a story driven game. No, what drives an MMO has always been the quest to get the best loot, and the best level, to build the best character. I would love a MMO to do story right, but as it is, it's amazingly sloppy, and if the story didn't exist, I might have had another drive of motivation, and not gotten tired of it so quickly.

"I demand trial by shooting aliens in the face!"

But as I mentioned last week, a story is nothing is it's not backed up by great gameplay, and in some respect Destiny has that, almost. There is the usual regenerating health/hiding behind cover/FPS gameplay that Bungie do so good, as they have proven with the Halo-series. And that's all fine and well, but when I am supposed to do the same thing hour after hour, with enemies that all kinda look the same, and can be defeated by the same tactic every time, the game becomes the biggest turn-off for me of MMO's. It succumbs to grinding to get bigger and better gear. As I mentioned earlier, this is what builds your character, the thing is that a character is more than just your level and your gear, it's personality, it's the ability to change the way you think of things and so much more. Gear and level leaves me with an empty shell, guided by Tyrion Lannister, but without any character himself, just another empty shell with a nice voice.

And there you go, from one location to another (nice location mind), same thing all the time. Even the big guys starts to feel like the same fight over and over again. Couldn't the big bosses at least have some kind of variation on how to beat them, other than shoot at them until they stop moving and explode with loot all over the place. I want something new, I want the game to keep challenging me, not just throw more of the same enemies at me.

As it is, Destiny is nothing for me, and maybe I'm being to hard saying it's destined to be forgotten, but I have a hard time seeing this holding up. With the kind of money it cost to make it might be remembered, but the game is a good weekend at best, but forgotten in the long run. I'm not going to play it at least, it doesn't appeal to me in the slightest, it's back to Gamestop with you.

Long ago I did a comparison of games in the same genre, pitting games from the present to games from the past. Maybe that wasn't a fair comparison, more mathematical than anything else, and now after playing Shovel Knight I have a reason to get back to the question, was games better in the past?

Why? Well the fact is that I have pretty much spent all of the current year playing games from two generations ago, meaning Playstation 2 and before. And I've had a really good time actually. At the same time I've bought games like Infamous: Second Son and Dragon Age: Inquisition, and I tried them out and was kinda underwhelmed to be honest. After playing Shovel Knight I think I finally figured out why I'm having such a hard time with new games.

I think it's all the padding, and there are a lot of different ways of padding a game out., not all of them bad mind you, but just most of them. The fact that I have to sit through a long intro just to get to playing the game, and then the game takes an hour or two for me to learn all of the features and things to do. I remember a time when the big argument that console gamers had against PC gamers was that I could just start up the console and be playing the game in less than a minute, something Shovel Knight does very good (after the game have been installed on the PS4 of course, because all consoles seems to be just PC wannabes), you just start the game, two presses of the button, a VERY short intro and hardly any tutorials. You're in action quickly. Dragon Age does this too, ish, there is a intro sequence, character creation (which honestly was as fun as I had with the game, so fun that I did it twice) and then you get right into the action... of a one hour tutorial-course. Final Fantasy VII did it in a good way in contrast, a quick into sequence, and then right into the action, and with no explanation at all to how the game worked, you had to figure it out for yourself, and that might seem like a bad thing (and when I played it first at 11 years old, it took me a good while to get how you played so yeah) but there seems to be a trend in games where they seem to treat you like an infant, Or maybe the games have in gameplay become so complicated that one needs to be educated in the system, but my reaction to a new game is still to press all the buttons to figure out what they do, but newer games lock off the buttons until you've gone through the tutorial. I know FFVII had a couple of tutorials as
well but then you were hooked, and it still let me do a lot of figuring
out myself. I managed to play it through at 11 years old and I barely
knew any English at that time, so I pretty much got through without the
tutorials. Shovel Knight was fun because it did what old games did, just play, and it reminded me how annoying it can be when I'm forced to learn the game before playing it, and not just learn while playing.

The first page of pictures of The Last of Us, and none are from the gameplay

There is one game that I just want to love so much, because every time I play it, I have a lot of fun, but then I just can't bring myself to continue, The Last of Us. It is a very padded game, as in, the game itself is really kinda bland, and I just play to get through the story. I love the story, it's one of the best in any game, but it's just such generic gameplay that I get sick of it. I don't know why, I love Uncharted, and they are not that different, but I just can't bring myself to like The Last of Us. For me, a game has to foremost be a game. If you take out the story, take out the characters, take out the settings, and just have the gameplay and everything that comes with that, is your game still a fun game? I am a strong believe that a great story can make a good game great, or make a great game into a masterpiece, but a bad game will still be a bad game with a great story. It doesn't matter how much you decorate your pile of shit, it's still going to be a pile of shit. I feel that many games now a days are trying to be films, or TV-series, and forgetting that they are in fact games. The stories of games are actually best when they use the medium to tell it, like in Half-Life or Bioshock, where you never leave your point of view, using the game to tell a story, rather than make a film and then slap a game on it. We did that already during the 90's, it was called a movie tie-in and they sucked.

Another thing that Dragon Age: Inquisition did, and the first game as well, was something very MMORPG-ish. This might just be my own preference, so if what I say now sounds appealing rather than appalling, just ignore this, but I have when games becomes so open that you can just wander into a place and realize way to late that the enemies here are way to high level for you. I get that games want to be free and sandbox and open world, like it's the world of the year, this and that has gone open world, but I need at least a little direction. Skyrim did this very well, the freedom to do whatever you wanted, but gave you direction to where you should go to do what you want. This was my problem with GTA IV as well, it felt like they just dropped me at a huge world and said "go nuts" so I had no sense of purpose, and ended up doing nothing at all.

Yaaaay, flying aroud like I am Batman!

I could go on with a lot of things I realize, like how there always seems to be commutes between one section of game and another, and how one can do they right, either short as in the mentioned Shovel Knight, or you can make them fun, as in Batman: Arkham City. But I think that what I said before pretty much sums it up, developers nowadays needs to remember that they are making games, and yes I know that games have evolved, they aren't as simple as they were before, and that's a good thing, sure, but when a game like Shovel Knight, that easily could have been done twenty years ago, is by far the most fun I've had with a game for a good while, then developers really need to start getting back to the roots of gaming, make it fun to play, not make the gameplay commutes between cut scenes.

Final thoughts on Shovel Knight, it's not a perfect game, there are annoyances, places where the faithful depiction of a 8-bit game gets in the way of gameplay, like having the special attack mapped to "square" + "up" instead of the unused "O"-button, but all in all, I recommend this, play it and realize that maybe games were better in the past, at least in some respect.

But as the Bible say, what your heart is full of, comes out the mouth, or the keyboard, in my case. The problem is I'm not done yet, I want to talk more about it, I'm going to start playing Final Fantasy Type-0 now and might have a review up when I'm done with it. Speaking of the blog in general, I'm aiming at posting a new post every Monday from now on, but I digress, let's talk Final Fantasy XV - Episode Duscae, will it save the Final Fantasy-brand and the JRPG's?

The effects of this scene leads to the most awesome part of the demo

For me, the Final Fantasy-brand was never lost, I loved FFXII, and as I've heard it, FFXI and FFXIV are great games, even if it kinda kills me to see them as numbered entries, they should be called Final Fantasy Online or something, why not just call FFXIV, "Final Fantasy: A Realm Reborn"? But never mind, you know how I feel for the only bad numbered Final Fantasy, and if not, check out my rants. And even if there is only one bad numbered Final Fantasy, I haven't played FFXIV or FFXI. I am, like many others are, not interested in an MMORPG. Therefore, I haven't played a new good Final Fantasy in almost ten years. That's a long time, an entire generation of consoles have been born and died. Therefore, FFXV can't be bad, that would wound me.

So is it? Well, we need to take some time and realize that Episode Duscae is a demo for a game that still doesn't have a release date. My guess would be late 2015, but it might be later. This means that this is still an unfinished game, and by a lot. Have that in mind as you read on, because for every thing I say is bad or could be better, might be fixed for the final product. So lets get started. I'll try not to spoil too much, but still, I might so SPOILER ALERT. There isn't that much of a story going on but still.

At the start you have been stranded with your crew because your car have broken down. A girl named Cindy (I'll get back to her as well) tells you she will fix it, but it will cost you. So to get the gil to pay for it, you decide to hunt down the mighty Behemoth, nicknamed Deadeye, for he has one dead eye, ingenious naming there. This might be the most awesomely hyped up monster in the entire series, I mean, you start of by seeing these huge paw-prints in the mud, and later blood on the ground, and deep claw marks in the stone. What find of monster could have done this? When you finally encounter the beast you get to sneak past it, quietly trying to not make a sound, and it's really suspenseful. Later you stalk it back to its nest and device a plan including a way too conveniently placed tank of gas. I won't say more about where the demo takes you, but there is a lot more than this.

At least it looks spectacular

Let's talk combat, it takes a while to get used to it to be honest, and I'm not sure if I like it. It works okay, but it's a bit clumsy, and I don't feel like I'm always in control. A lot more in control than in FFXIII at least though. The combat works like this, you attack by holding down the "square" button, lock on by holding in R1 for a while, and goes to defensive mode by holding down L1, where you pretty much dodges anything. You can teleport-strike with "X" and use special attacks with "triangle". Dodging, teleport-strikes and special attacks drains MP and when you're out of MP you turn into a cripple with broken arms, and can't fight, so you need to get out of there and let it regenerate. When your HP reaches 0, it's the same thing as with the MP, and if you're hit during this time your max HP drops a bit. If that reaches 0 you die. Your team can heal you, and you can heal them when this happens, although in the heat of battle it's really just chance if you will heal your partners or if you will teleport to somewhere else. And your partners aren't that good at healing your either, but if you're tired of waiting, you can always use a potion.

So, let's tear this system apart! Not using too much MP takes a lot of getting used to, as do most of the system, I still hadn't gotten a good grip on it by the end of my four hour play through, but I got a lot better. The lock-on is the thing I like the least I think, as it only makes your character aim at that enemy, but the camera doesn't follow, so most of the time I'm just attacking something I'm not seeing, making the already confusing scene even more clustered, which means that it's hard for me to see when the enemy is attacking, so I rarely used the defensive stance, except when I could use it to parry an attack, when an indicator said that there was an attack incoming. Still, the combat works fine, I'll give it a pass all in all, but it is still not a good sign that I actively tried to avoid combat, when I could. Maybe it will get better when I get a better grip on the system.

The beautiful land of Final Fantasy XV

Let's spread the love, before I get into the really worrying things about the demo. The world is amazing, living and beautiful, and the seamless transitions from exploring and battle made everything come alive even more. The fact that I can see the huge creatures in the water, from quite far away, gives an even more alive feel to the world. In the part of the map I got to explore, there are two places that are inhabited by friendly people, both feel like real places, one rest-stop in the middle of the woods, and one gas-station. I keep saying it, but it feels like the places are alive, for real, and I never thought that I would be this happy to see inhabited places again, after number thirteen. If I had to complain on one thing, I would be that you can't yet talk to every character you meet, something I hope they fix, because talking to NPC's in cities and so on is another thing I've missed from not having cities and so on. The graphics need some work though, It's not the best looking game on the PS4 even though it's still ways to be done. I just hope that the game won't feel dated when it's finally released.

So let's get some shit on! There are some things I really hate about the game, but most are more of a worrying trend, that I hope they fix for the final game, no pun intended. The first thing, or the first couple of things, has to do with the combat. The thing is that there is no flow to it. Battling enemies actually takes a lot of time, one of the biggest complains I had with FFXIII as well. I hope that Square-Enix gets that the thing with moving away from turn-based battles is for the battles to run more smoothly, but the average battle in FFXV take longer than the average battle in most other Final Fantasy-games. The best combat in a Final Fantasy game, however bad and unnecessary the game was otherwise, is still Final Fantasy X-2. It was quick, fluent, there was urgency, but you still felt in control. If the numbered entries in the series are to move away from the turn-based combat, fine, but it must be to make the battles more fluent, faster, and more fun. The battles in FFXV aren't bad, but as I said, I'm worried that the battles will be long and drawn out as in FFXIII.

Prompto, Gladiolus, Noctis and Ignis, the gang we meet in the demo

Speaking of long battles, I often met enemies, that I at least think was way above my level, but I fought them anyway, and I didn't really lose, but the battle dragged on and on and on and on, and I more and more enemies spawned in on the battle I was doing, and in the end, I just got bored and rather than the battle ending with me lying annihilated on the ground because of the enemies strong attacks, I found myself running from the battles, not out of fear, but out of boredom. But then again, I hope they fix this, and it might be something they intend to do. Another thing that bothered me was the fact that I did this kind of thing with an enemy at the beginning of the game, felt the enemy too hard, and ran away, because the enemy didn't do enough damage to kill me. When the demo was over, and I was on my way back to Cindy, I tried again, having gone from level 4 to level 22, and I honestly couldn't tell if I had levelled up or not. The enemy still didn't do much damage to me, but again, the battle took forever. So I had enough and summoned Ramuth (Yeah, I loved it so much when I got to do that, amazing) and he pretty much insta-killed EVERYTHING! He seriously takes such massive damage that you win every fight. I mean, this guy is pretty much a rage quit button, that can be summoned when your HP reaches zero. Not sure how to feel about him really, because I hope that he doesn't make the game way to easy, that probably could be the case, but my guess is that they just put him in the demo for the awesomeness factor, and that they will dial the damage he does down for the final product.
And then there is Cindy. I think she's fine, I love that she is the daughter of a man named Cid, and she seems to have a fun personality too. I'm not a big fan of the object she pretty much becomes in some of the scenes, like the poor girl never learned how bend her frickin' knees, just to always show of her butt, but the thing that gets me the most annoyed about her is the accent. I'm sorry to anyone who takes offend to this, but a thick red-neck accent is probably the most annoying accent ever. I get that she is supposed to be sexy, yeah, but even when this is the case, it's, for me, the most unsexy accent there is, because there is few things that can turn me off a woman, as her being stupid, and that is what the accent makes the character seem, at first glance, unintelligent That is why Fran in FFXII is sexy, she has an intelligent accent. Cindy grew on me though, she seemed like a decent character in the end. Accents are, despite what I'm saying, just the first impression. Then again, the clerk in the store does it and has no character besides the accent, and I feel like, can I summon Ramuth right here?

All in all, Final Fantasy XV feels a bit too MMO-ish for it's own good, but I still left the demo wanting more, and that's a good sign. Fine characters that I think can grow on me, I just hope there are more than the guys I got to hang with here, I need the diversity of the other Final Fantasies! Now I hope that they can fix what can be fixed, and I'll be happy, and I am looking forward to it though, please, please, please don't let me down, don't make me do the Final Fantasy XV - ranting deluxe in a year!
Hate
This
Game....

But you know what, I don't ever care any more, I mean, it's not like I've obsessed so much over the game that I dedicated four posts to how mush I hate this game...
Grand Gaia and Cocoon is just so poorly presented, I didn't even realize that Cocoon was orbiting Grand Gaia until the world opened up. On the other hand, cities like Junon, Midgar and Niblheim is places that will always stick in your mind. They are amazing places, instant classics, and the town was treated like a character, you could talk to the towns people and get all the background for the place you were at at the time.

There are no cities in FFXIII... not that you can explore and talk to people in at least. I don't think I need to say more, however small the towns were in earlier FF-games, they still had more character than anything in FFXIII. I need to forget more about this shit feast. I'm gonna go play the FFXV-demo that I got with type-0. Please give me a bit hope there Square.....
I started this year with a notion to make it the Year of JRPG's, #theyearofjrpg, and I have so far been through Persona 3 and 4, started with Final Fantasy V and is currently finishing of Final Fantasy VII. For this reason I was surfing the internet for some information about the new re-release (for that is what it is) of FFVII on ps4, something it have been really quiet about since the announcement. There I read a post about it, saying that there is more to the re-release of FFVII than we think, stating that games like Before Crisis, Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus and other media that was produced during the middle of 00's like Advent Children, was building up to something, that there was lore to take from, for a sequel to the original Final Fantasy VII, and that the re-release would remind, or initiate, people to the game, to set up a new one. If you're more interested, read the article.

As I was reading about the possible storyline of a new game, and the references to Dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core-plots, I got this horrible feeling of deja vu...
I first played Kingdom Hearts when they released it in 2002, and absolutely loved it. I heard that there was a spin-of on the Game Boy Advance, but didn't pay it much mind, I was only 13, and didn't have the money for a GBA anyway so. But then KH2 came out and I realized something was wrong. why is Sora trapped in a white thing at the start? That's not how the first game ended. I gnawed at me throughout the game, a game I still really liked, but I couldn't feel connected to as the first. the GBA game Chain of Memories, had not been a side-story, but a direct sequel to the first game, meaning that I missed out on some of the lore in the world I was playing. This is not how it is supposed to work, I should be able to play the first and second game without feeling like I've missed something, and I just dread for the people who played Kingdom Hearts one and two and then nothing, and are still longing for the third one, because they loved the main games, but never bothered with the side-games. They are going to be incredibly confused, I am probably, even though I've played most of the side-games as well, going to be really confused, I am already! You can't make a sequel to a game based on lore from a spin-of.
I love Final Fantasy VII, played it through probably around ten times since I acquired it in 1999. I love the game, and I realize more and more things about it and the world every time I play it. When I read about the lore in the other games, I felt the same feeling as I do when I think of Kingdom Hearts. It's getting too complicated, and it's taking lore from the spin-of games to build on the new one. I don't want this, it's already too complicated. Final Fantasy VII had at its core a simple storyline. It starts off as a people versus the establishment, and had a environmental theme throughout the game, bad guy shows up, the way the bad guy threatens the planet is in line with what has been established about the planet, it's complicated, but not too complicated. It makes you think. Having a sequel that builds on a spin-of, that builds on the main game, gets a bit too complicated, for there are suddenly a lot more to follow, if you want to understand everything, and for people who didn't own a PSP, or didn't played Dirge of Cerberus, which was a LOT of people, they've suddenly missed a big chunk of what the story is based on.

Still, the worst part is the supposed villain. The first game establishes it pretty well, Sephiroth is the biggest and the best member of SOLDIER, and is a man that in the end was one with the planet, a God literary, and we kicked his ass (another common FF-theme)! To put another First Class SOLDIER that Sephiroth could have easily won over (and if he didn't in some spin-of I haven't played, I call bullshit) is just anti-climactic. Cloud and the gang managed to defeat him, the biggest threat in the world. The new guy would spend the entire game running from an inevitable Omnislash to the face. Maybe they could pull it of, if the bad guy was some new kind of Ancient Weapon, something that builds on what we know of Final Fantasy VII.

The supposed hinted villain of a hypothetical FFVII-2

There is the core of it, a hypothetical Final Fantasy VII-2 would have to take its story and setting from the original game, and honestly completely disregard the spin-of games, do a Lucas and declare them not canon, let them be rumours or fan-fiction by Tetsuya Nomura. I'm not completely against a sequel, there might be something to build on here, even though I rather never see one, as it might risk tarnishing the original game even more. But don't make a Kingdom Hearts and alienate more people than necessary. A spin-of is not a sequel, and to market a sequel as a spin-of is misleading from the start, and that's what Kingdom Hearts does, they make sequels. so please Square-Enix, don't do the same to Final Fantasy VII, or you might want to start locking your doors.
One of the first posts I did back in 2011 was about how the Japanese RPGs had been almost extinct and that the world needed to get back to what they were doing in the golden age of JRPG, with games like Final Fantasy VI and VII, Chrono Trigger, Sukoiden and Secret of Mana. Even later games like the Shin Megami Tensei-series (Lucifer's call for my sake), Tales of Symphonia and Star Ocean 3 held up really well, but a decline from there could be seen, as the stories became more embarrassingly written and the gameplay didn't quite hold up. Something like Final Fantasy XII took chances and made an, in my opinion, great game, if only lacking in character. Eternal Sonata was a great JRPG and did everything right regarding gameplay. The problem was that the dialogues were horrendous, just completely terrible, and they dragged on, with ethic speech after ethic speech.

I think that the problem with many Japanese game in general, is that the scripts just can't compare to the huge RPGs like Mass Effect, or games like Enslaved, Uncharted or the Last of Us. And somewhere there is where I started to feel that another good JRPG might not be the something I was going to see again, and the genre has been declared dead many times, even though many games were released, that was really good. Games like Bravely Default, Kingdom Hearts and of course, Persona 4. Tetsuya Nomuras The World Ends With You, is another great example of good JRPG that came out the wrong side of JRPG greatness, with new innovative gameplay and a great story.
Okay, so the problem with me looking back at the five games I listed as the hope of JRPGs, is the of them, almost four years later, is that three of them still haven't been released, and of the other two, I only tried one of them. Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy versus XIII did a spectacular show at the 2013 E3, and little me bounced up and down in excitement. The excitement for KH3 never really dropped, and I just got a hold on the KH2 HD-version and now have a new found hype for the continuation of the series. The now titled Final Fantasy XV on the other hand, looked awesome to begin with, and it still might be, but a lot of recent footage have made my hopes go down for the game. Who knows, maybe it'll surprise me.

Okay, so before all that, Persona 5 is going to blow my mind. It is, there is no other acceptable outcome for the game, yeah okay, maybe I have my hopes up just a little too high, but come on, it's Persona 5, how can I not have my hopes up for this title but yeah, time to get down to earth. Persona 5 hits me sometime next year, on ps4.

Okay, so of the ones that actually got a release then? Ni no Kuni was the one I played of them, even though I heard that The Last Story got pretty good reviews. I was kinda torn by the two. I liked the style, and the animation is amazing, you can see that Studio Ghibli put a lot of effort here, just great. But still, it was a bit too slow for me I think, I couldn't really get into it, unfortunately. I heard it got great reviews though, so I might give it another go some day.

One of this years best games.

I want to talk about another game as well, that I played a lot this summer on my newly acquired Ps4. The game is Child of Light, and is developed by a small studio within Ubisoft, that uses the amazing Ubi art graphics-engine. This game just reeks of atmosphere, an amazing lead character and great gameplay. It gets a bit slow at times, and the difficulty is a bit bad, normal is way too easy, and hard is good for a while, but the need to grind gets bigger and a bit annoying. But if I'm going to be serious, this might be the best JRPG released on this side of 2010 (not counting P4Golden, re-release).

Like a hero at the bottom of the mountain, after having been kicked of the floating island at the end of the second act, the JRPGs are on their way up again, maybe Persona 5 can hit mainstream, maybe Final Fantasy XV turns out to be just as good as VII, or maybe Kingdom Hearts III will contain a Star Wars world, a Marvel world, and a world based on Frozen, and thereby acquire both nerds, Marvel-fans and a new batch of teenage girls, singing "let it go" with Donald Duck. If only...
The Arkham
series brought my interest in Batman from cool superhero to me now
being a really big fan. Arkham Asylum introduced everything from
classic Riddler challenges, its absolutely superb fighting system,
really good story, awesome villains, a badass Batman and cool bosses.
The game's only weakness was the length of the game that was too
short in my opinion. Arkham City was Batman perfection, 25 hours were
spent on the first play-through, better story, a bigger ensemble of villains, cooler Batman, one of gaming's coolest boss battles (Mr.
Freeze) and an already great fighting system polished to perfection,
and the game trounced every single game that year. (yes even Skyrim,
but it's overrated ... more on that in a later post perhaps ....). I
loved it so much, that I two years ago dressed like Hugo Strange on
Halloween. So I followed the news of Arkham Origins with cautious
positivity. Cautiously because of the announcement that Rocksteady
would not be developing this part. But it was still Arkham, how much
wrong could you really do?

The game is placed five years
before the events of Arkham Asylum and City. So it is a greener and
more of a beginner Batman that we encounter, where he is only two
years into his career as Gotham's protector. So of course he doesn't
have as cool a suit and not nearly as many cool gadgets as in the
other games. Here comes mistake number one. For that statement is
completely wrong, the suit looks much more armoured out, and Batman
begins the game with most of the gadgets he needed to amass five
years later. Worst of all is the Grapple-boost, which in Arkham City
is told to just be a prototype that Batman must master to use. Here,
it's standard from the start. It takes away the illusion of a prequel
when it makes him more equipped than in later editions. I mean, did
Batman just think, “Nah, the villains are way to easy for me, I
should dial down on the awesome gadgets to make it fair” in the
previous instalments? The only thing that really show a more
inexperienced Batman is that he must discover the villains who would
otherwise be obvious to us. But perhaps one can overlook this.
Perhaps.

It's Christmas, and Black Mask has just promised a
sum of money to eight assassins, for anyone on this single night that
can kill "The Bat". Just like the Batman's Origins-twist,
it is a promising idea that opens up a lot of gameplay possibilities.
And just like Origins-twist, it's clumsy and poorly executed. The bad
guys you encounter (even those beyond the eight main ones) are
presented clumsily and hastily, and with the exception of two or
three, they are all boring and predictable, and in some cases, not at
all as themselves. The story takes an unexpected and unwelcoming
twist quite so early in the game that makes you angry yell "huh
?! In this game, too? "The story does not get much more
interesting than that, either, and I struggle through the game mostly
of the motivation that I need to play it through at least once, I
mean, it's still an Arkham-game.

The boss fight are almost
all broken down into two categories. Fight against the big guy,,
where you dodge and hit, or in Predator Mode, but with boss guy. Only
two fights deviates from this formula, and only one of them is
entertaining. A big step backwards when you see what was done with
the Freeze-fight in Arkham City. In general, it feels as if the
Warner Bros.-team not dared to change too much, have been too
cowardly and run on an idea only halfway

For what is good in
the game is three things. First, the Predator occasions are still
really entertaining. Nothing compares to hear someone yell "Where
are you ?!" while watching their panic reflected in movements
and heartbeats. But it's never as good as in City, mainly
because they are fewer and in scenery that are not nearly as
inspiring or imaginative. But not bad

Second, the fighting
system is still good. Why change a winning concept? But it never
feels as refined or perfect as the City, and you never feel that you
master it the more you practice, for it is not quite as smooth and
flowing. This can actually get really frustrating in the harder
fights, where your timing needs to be perfect, and the game doesn't
register your counters directly. But still the main draw of the game.

Thirdly, and here it comes the part with not daring to move
away from the original, the new thing that they put into Origins is a
system to reconstruct crime scenes. By going back and forth in the
event you can find new clues and get a bigger picture of what has
happened at a crime scene, and bit by bit quite like a puzzle, you
piece the pieces together into a crime canvas. This is actually
really entertaining ... well when the opportunity is given. For when
I can play through the game and encounter such a scene three or four
times, then there is something wrong. It's so good, why isn't
there more of this? I wish it could give room for really big crime
scenes so you really get to feel how it is to be the world's greatest
detective. But even here it falls flat.

I'll be honest and
say that I have not tried the multiplayer mode much. My friend has,
however, and he says this of his experiences: Clearly the greatest
component of Arkham Origins, even though it has its flaws, and
suffers from a server and connection issues (it can take a long time
to find people to play with). The setting is cool where you either
play as the Joker's gang or Bane's gang in a gang war, but with
Batman and Robin lurking around every corner, played by another team.
Make up your own gang member and start gang wars, it's Batman saga
from the villains' point of view, and it's pretty cool.

Finally
Origins is not a bad game, and if you like Asylum and City, I think
you'll get through this too, at least once. But it is still hard to
feel anything but disappointment when virtually everything is a
little worse than in Rocksteady's masterpiece.

BigAssAnvilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13976946938262983111noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-457201608712998951.post-26142571258773954262014-10-27T22:51:00.000+01:002014-10-27T22:51:15.908+01:002013, a look back, or, about time!Yes I know, 2013 is long gone, and almost half of 2014 have already passed, but still, I like doing these flashbacks of the year gone by game-wise, so I will continue doing them.

Of the games released in 2012, that I in my 2012 flashback said I wanted to try in 2013, there are some I've played, some I've not, here's my two cents.

Dishonored Never played, might get back to it though
Journey Never played, might get back to it also
Hotline Miami Played, loved, but never got through might pick up
Gravity Rush (If I get a Vita) Played a little, liked, might get back to it
Halo 4 Played, disappointed, but will finish, someday
Assassins Creed III Went like all Ass-Creed games for me
Botanicula Never played, small chance of picking up
Far Cry 3 Played through, loved it
Thomas Was Alone Never played, small chance of picking up
Dear Esther Never played, small chance of picking up

So yeah, 2013 started with equal amount awesomeness as disappointment, but then again, both those things are part of the theme of 2013. DMC: Devil may cry was the first game I played, it was good, really good, but I've already said that. After that I tried another favourite of mine, or really, of me and my friend, Army of Two: Devil's Cartel. This was worse, a lot worse. The core mechanics have been dumbed down, no way to dodge, like in the other games, no in-game brotherly love-things to do, no fist bumping button, although we did it a lot ourselves. But the story is pretty much the most insulting thing you could do to this series, simply horrible. You who have played it knows what I'm talking about. The big twist, incredibly stupid, I saw it coming very early, and it's just insulting to the fans of the other games. Customization was awesome though, I spend a lot of time there. It fells kinda like, if you put the story of the first game, with the gameplay of the second, and the customization of this one, into one, that would be the ultimate game. But yeah, this was a bit worse in almost all aspects of the game, than it's predecessors, another theme you'll see later.

Another game that pretty much wowed me was of course Bioshock Infinite, a game that I had a lot of anticipation for, and that delivered on almost all accounts. The story might be the best of 2013 and the characters, the acting and the setting is up to par with it. Gameplay is great, mostly, it just felt a little more hard to control that the other games, which was a shame, but I still recommend it for all it's worth.

One of the most positive things I have to say about this year in gaming, is the often named "worst uncharted game ever" Tomb Raider. I really liked this game, I found it fun to play and I actually spent a lot of time collecting all the stuff and got 100% completion for it, and it felt worth it. One might argue that the characters themselves might be a bit underdeveloped and uninterested, Lara included, but it's still so well acted that you might not even notice. I'm definitly looking forward to the sequel in 2015.

I also played a bit of Metro: Last Light and found it to be really entertaining, something I didn't think I would when I first started playing it. It has a nice balance between stealth and combat, and the AI-problems with the last games are (mostly) fixed. Definitely something worth checking out if you feel like playing a good FPS and have run out of other games to play.

Remember Me was a really bad film, that in no way inspired the game with the same name. The game on the other hand, was a quite good action-game with a story I actually really liked, and got really in to, with twist and turns that I found really engaging. The combat was well done, if only suffering from a bit of the repetitive side of style. The segments in where you rewrites someone's memories to fit your own agenda is both really disturbing and a really great and original segment of the gameplay.

I had huge hopes for The Last of Us, as a huge fan of the Uncharted-series. And the story and acting and characters and all that stuff is amazing. I get drawn into the world immediately and just love it. I played it for three hours straight when I got it, on release. But since then I never played it again. I'm not sure why, but I thing that despite all the great stuff about the game, I was disappointed. It was mostly because of one thing, that seems to be starting a trend lately. And that is story over gameplay. I'm not saying the gameplay of The Last of Us is bad, no it's quite good, nothing special, but good enough. But I really feel like I'm just playing the game to get trough the story. I need to be able to love the gameplay as much as the story, I need the gameplay to engage me and actually feel like a part of the story. Tomb Raider had kinda the same vibe, but fortunately for them, the story wasn't anything special. Maybe I'll pick up The Last of Us again, maybe not, but I will never see it as the masterpiece that many critics and fans hail it as.

Next up is the obligatory Suda 51 game of the year, Killer is Dead. And I got to say, after the quirky and really fun experience I had with both Shadows of the Damned and especially Lollipop Chainsaw, I was kinda underwhelmed by this. The story and the characters seems way to serious to be a Suda 51 game, and comes of like genericly Japanese, with horrible story trying to be deep, and angst men trying too hard to be serious. And the date-missions are, to put it lightly, embarrassing and awkward. With all that said, gameplay is still good and I played the game through, having a good time, so not that bad, just not up there with his other games,

Diablo III for consoles, awesome game that me and my friend had a blast with during the fall, and really not much more to say here, I love consoles more than PC (Come at me bro) and this fit me like a glove.

Rayman Legends was another game I looked forward to for a long time, and when it was finally released, I loved almost every second of it, incredible and amazing game. The music-levels might be the best thing I have ever played, a delight every time. Maybe even a bit too awesome, since it made the other levels feel like busy-work to get to the amazing reward. But still really fun busy-work, so can't complain. If you, like me, loved Rayman Origins, you'll love this one even more.

I also tried two HD-remixes, DuckTales: Remastered and Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix. Both as good games as they were when they were first released, an not much more though. fun to play again though.

Man, I've played a lot of games this year, comes with having a real full-time job I guess. Anyway, Beyond: Two Souls. what a piece of crap that was. David Cage thinks he can get away with releasing another interactive film, but I was already tired of it when Heavy Rain came out, that only got away with it because it had a fun murder mystery behind it, but this is just horrible, like watching a film that is ten hours long, and not a good film either. just a long for perverts quest to get to see Ellen Page shower (definitely not me).

Here we go, Pokémon X and Y, have you ever played a Pokémon game, before, then you know what you're up for. As far as that goes, this part of the franchise make the most to change a lot of the world, which is a good thing, I had a lot of fun with this for a great while. Check it out, if you're a fan of the series, but then again, if you are, you probably already have.

Lastly, I need to talk about the game I looked forward to, for a very long time, that I hoped to be, and that I wrote in the expect of 2013-log, that I thought would be the game of the year, of 2013. It wasn't, oh how it wasn't. Not even close. That honour I proudly give to Bioshock: Infinite, followed by DMC: Devil May Cry. Actually, I'm not even going to do this here, I'm going to review the living shit out of the crap-fest that is Batman: Arkham Origins and I will try to be merciful, and open, but I know in my heart that this can not go unpunished. I will review, long overdue.

(Catching my breath)

Lastly, here are some game from 2013 that I hope to get around to (or already have) in 2014:
Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
Shin Megami Tensei IV
Pikmin 3
Saints Row IV
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
Killzone: Shadow Fall
The Wolf Among Us
Super Mario 3D World
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

I'm not doing a anticipated for 2014, It's a lot too late, this might actually be a bit fun to read, but I'll see you soon for at least two reviews, maybe even more. Until then, have a nice time and game on! It's a lot more balanced, where the really epic boxes definitly exists, but are a lot more rare. You can acually go through a grand prix withous having one blue shell, or lightning, being fired. This makes for a more skill-based game, like the first game on the SNES. Granted I have only ever played the console-games, so I don't know how the handheld games are, but I always heard they were better.

The most impressive thing about the game is the level-design. When I playd with some friends, the frase "that was a really cool track" was uttered very often. A lot of it has to do with the tracks often switching from air, ground and water, from normal gravity to upside down and all around. It feels great and plays great!

I like how all the Super Mario World-bosses are available as playable characters, we especially grew fond of Roy, who looks like bowsers very metrosexual brother. Ah, Sith-day the perfect day to be angry and say stuff like, I really, really hate this game!

You know, I think I get it now, what really drives me apeshit-crazy over this game. I recently picked up Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remix, and I just have to say that it made me get why I hate Final Fantasy XIII so much. The writing of it all, I just don't get how bad it gets. I mean, I played through FFX and even though Yuna is an unoriginal shygirl that always needs to be rescued, and Tidus is way too annoying for me to think he's an appealing character, I still feel for them. They are still characters, and (SPOILER) when they have to part ways at the end I seriously started to tear up a bit, (but not really because I am a man!) and that's with the worst characters in the game, (well except Rikku). The point is, the story and the writing has me invested, even with the annoying characters. Annoying doesn't make them bad characters. And I mean, both Khimari, Lulu and especially Auron are awesome badass characters. But Final Fantasy XIII has no sympathetic characters at all, constantly makes me ask one simple question over and over and over, the question all writers fear to hear about their work: WHO IN ALL THE WORLD TALK LIKE THIS?!

I mean, there is cryptic, and then there's pulling shit out of you ass! I played the demo for Lightning returns and even though they have improved some things gameplay-wise, I still don't think that Square-Enix gets why people hated Final Fantasy XIII in the first place. It's not the battle-system, it's not even the linear world (but yeah, it's that too), it is the piss-poor characters, the story with more plot holes than a Michael Bay-film, and it's a script that is nowhere near believable.

And I'm not saying that other Final Fantasy-games had stories without plot holes, they did, especially FFX, but the thing is that Final Fantasy X still is a good game, with a good story, because it knows how to distract us from the flaws, because there is always going to be flaws. But they are just so easy to see in Final Fantasy XIII. I think much of that is the script being as bad as it is.

I realize that I have contradicted myself in my first rants, where in one I hated that the characters weren't more similar, and in the other I said I wish they were less alike. The thing is, I want to be able to evolve my character in a path not usually their way, like when I made Yuna a badass warrior who did 99 999 damage way before my Auron ever could. But not all "jobs" are available for every character at the start, and when they do become available, they're really expensive. This means that a very specific set of characters are the preferred team, and choosing another team might make the game way too hard. There's no reason to play again, I'm just going to pick the same team that time again. But I still do want it to be a change in what characters I use, but there are no individual attacks or the like, no Limit Breaks or Overdrives. You got the Ecle-whatever Summon-thing, that I guess are different, but the sure felt the same, and I never used them much anyway so the feel pointless. The problem is that this just adds to the blandness of the characters. The Limit Breaks added character in for example Final Fantasy VII. Only Cloud could do the awesome and devastating Omnislash, only Tifa could stack her Limit's on top of each other. Only Cid could call a missile strike from the Highwind, or light a dynamite on fire with his cigarette, because it makes sense, and it builds character.

Yeah, I think I'm done. Well, not really, I never did get to finishing the thing, never got past the last boss, and I do feel that I have to, but just not right now, not for a while, and I'm done ranting, if you did like the game, could get into the characters and so on, fine, good for you, I just really couldn't, and I know many agree with me. But yeah, it hurts seeing a series I love so much get this kind of treatment. I am psyched to see the next instalment, and Final Fantasy XV does look really good. But then again, I have been wrong before.

I'm going to write here, every day I play, kind of like a diary, share my thoughts, what still holds up, what doesn't hold up? How has the series progressed until now, how has it evolved. I will therefore play as much as I can of the game, trying to get all the things you can get, for the ultimate Zelda-experience.

I don't currently own all game though. I am missing a Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, The Oracle of Seasons and the Minish Cap. I do have The Wind Waker, but only the HD version on the Wii U, so I will have to get that one as well.

On top of all this, I am only doing the main Nintendo-games, meaning no CD-i, no Crossbow-training and I will not do the four swords adventure.

In any case, I started playing The Legend of Zelda today, and had an approach to it much like Skyrim, a childish-"you can't tell me what to do" kind of thing. So after the introductory level 1, I started exploring, and realized how much I remember from playing this game over and over as a kid. Where to blow a hole, where to burn a bush. So by the time I got ro level 3 (which I did before level 2, because I couldn't find it.)

I had acquired some sweet new gear in from of a sword and a ring that somehow changes my clothes, reducing my damage. Still, the game is a but challenging at times but gets easier a my gear becomes more awesome. Not sure if that's bad yet...

I don't really mind the controller, at times I get a sore thumb from the steering cross, but it's fun to play the old NES again.

What strikes me the most though is how fast you're able to advance. I got through the first four castles plus some exploring in about 2 hours, That's almost half the game. It strikes me as a completely different experience that the games of today, giving more of a replay value because it's just that fun. And it gives you more time for exploring.

It's no wonder that the first game became the ultra-hit it was, I get it. It holds up, it's different than the games of today, but I might get in to that more later, for now, this is me giving my two cents on this day of playing. Stay tuned, as this long series of posts (and hopefully a revival of the blog) is far from over.

I am impressed, a lot more so than I was for the Wii U, which once again will be really behind, specs-wise. Some great games were showed, some surprise visits and a lot of absolutely gorgeous tec-demos. Highlight of the evening was David Cage's tec-demo, the appearance of Blizzard to announce Diablo III on the PS3 and PS4 and Watch Dogs, that still looks amazing.
So there's my quick first thoughts about it, I will write a more elaborate post once I have the time, for now, I too must sleep. Bye BigAssAnvilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13976946938262983111noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-457201608712998951.post-70855357283673090612013-02-20T19:00:00.001+01:002013-02-20T19:00:54.859+01:00It is time, Playstation 4 revealAt 00:00 (swedish time), in 5 hours from now, playstation will show us what they call "the future of playstation" and yeah, there's not many things that could mean, other than that they're revealing the new Playstation 4. Their show can be watched here: http://www.gamereactor.se/pslive/ probably, if not, I'm sure that you can find another site streaming it. After the show I will blog about it here, so stay tuned! For the future!BigAssAnvilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13976946938262983111noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-457201608712998951.post-75539026688145939082013-02-01T11:24:00.001+01:002013-02-01T11:24:40.519+01:00First impressions - Metal Gear Rising: RevengeanceSo I had the chance to try out a upcoming game. Let's not waste any time, here is what I thought of my first hours with Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Metal Gear is for me a game I played a long time ago. Both Metal Gear Solid and the sequel is really great games. Why not the others you may ask? Well, I've only played them, and not a lot. The third was fun enough, but I found myself not having the patience to play it. Therefore, the first and second game remain the only one I've really played. So what then do I think of Revengeance? It is, in many aspects what I should have expected, but didn't. It's one of those game that are not nessesarily bad games, but I just get so irritated and angry at them. Like Final Fantasy XIII... So what's good about this? Well, the gimmic itself works good, being able to slice up anything, in any way. It will probably get old, but for the time I spent with it, it was fun. So fun in fact, that I trapped myself on the beach with no way up, because I destroyed the stairs. Took me a while to figure out how to get up from there without it. But what I hate the most about this game is the simple and stupid fighting system. There are three things to do, either quick attacks with X, heavy attacks with Y, or holding the LT to enter blade mode and slice however you want, but that's retarded in a fight, unless you're at the end of a fight and want to slice and dice the enemy. And that's it, no alternative combos as far as I can see, maybe you can unlock them later but there's still a messy system. You don't even have the ability to dodge, no, instead you have to parry pressing x and point the Left Stick at the enemy. Mostly this works fine, I have not too much trouble on my way to the first boss, but I still died once or twice. I'm not sure why, because I kind of did the same thing twice and made it the second time. The boss is the worst though, I really have no idea of what I'm doing. I parry, but have no time for retaliation, because the boss attacks immediately afterwards, leaving me to parry again, and again and again. And when I actually attacks, he does to, and I end up loosing more life than him anyway. And there's no trick to him either, you just have to wail on him enough and hope for him to die. I have no idea what I'm doing, no sense of control. I always end up just smashing X and Y, hoping something works.

Comparing this with DmC is kind of obligatory, and the only thing I can think of that Revengeance does better is the graphics, it looks beautiful. Otherwise, DmC has a better script, characters, story (probably), fighting system and overall gameplay. DmC is the game that held your hand and slowly let go to let you meet harder and harder foes, the game that says, "wanna be awesome and bad ass? Let's be awesome and bad ass". Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is the game that throws you into the wolves and says, "prove you're worthy" but you're not, you've just started playing. It's the game that says, "I'm so much better than you and you suck! Oh, you finally managed to beat the boss? Just a fluke" and you know he's right. May e I just suck at it, but I find it hard to see how most people be good at this. So there's my ten cents, I'll probably never play this game again.

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
BigAssAnvilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13976946938262983111noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-457201608712998951.post-23577849853458770182013-01-29T15:59:00.002+01:002013-01-29T15:59:21.152+01:002013 I long the most for...Wow, we leave a great year behind and look forward to what seems to be an even better year. Why, you may ask? Well, because reasons I am about to say, right now.

I mean, how good can a year start? First of all I look forward (?) to DmC, yeah, well, I've already played it... thrice, and is on my forth run, and despite some flaws, where all are quite small, this is a game that really lived up to my expectations, and then some. But, it that's not all January has to offer. Remember my top 5 hope for the Japanese RPG? In fifth place I placed a called Ni no Kuni. It's been released, to great reviews, and therefore I am hyped. My love for the genre is big enough that this is a real must have.

This spring has a lot to offer, and is the main reason that this year will kick last years ass. We have two huge contenders for the "Best Action Hack 'n' Slash" prize other than DmC, both Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, from the geniuses that gave us the original Devil May Cry and the quite overrated but still good Bayonetta. Let's see if they can do anything new with the genre they once defined, but I have high hopes. Second we have God of War: Ascension and I love the series, so much that I think that Dante's Inferno is a great game, well, it's the same game. So this also promises to be an awesome gore feast with our most beloved demi-god.

In the more serious category this spring we have the Uncharted wannabe Tomb Raider reboot and the Uncharted creator's The Last of Us. Tomb Raider looks sweet, but The Last of Us look to be one of the best games this year, if not the best. I love how the industry seems to be taking a more serious turn to scripts and acting, and I think both these games will play on both amotions and general F*ck Yeah attitude.

Sequel time! The most anticipated sequels this spring are two very different games, in on corned we have BioShock Infinite, a serious, bad ass, dive into despair, but this time in the clouds. I love the feel and look of this game, and yeah, not many shooters this year, so I think this will dominate the genre, by far. Second we have Rayman Legends for the Wii U. Origins was so much fun playing alone, the wacky design, the wonderful controller, the graphics Oh dear mother of all that is good and pure, the graphics! And then three of my friends came over to play. We're talking fun overload here, so just based on that, this is going to be amazing.

I will be looking forward a lot to information this year. Both Playstation 4 and the new Xbox is around the corner, and that's going to be amazing. It will be a close call which company has the best E3 presentation, with two new consoles, and a Nintendo that will probably show us Super Smash 4, a Legend of Zelda in HD, a new Mario game and whatever Retro Studios has been up to (New Metroid *fingers crossed*). I hope to find out more about The Walking Dead Season 2, Watch Dogs, Remember Me, Beyond: Two Souls and what faith has become The Last Guardian.

And there it is, what I look forward to, in 2013. No GTA V? No, I don't like GTA, it's too free, I have no motivation! But yeah, I'll probably play it if someone I know gets it. But this year has plenty of awesome to go around. I'll probably go for The Last of Us or BioShock: Infinite as game of the year. That is, if not a certain steady rock keeps the streak going an produces a game every two years. Then maybe, the price will once again go to the man in the cape.BigAssAnvilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13976946938262983111noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-457201608712998951.post-36626591025202094382013-01-17T23:33:00.001+01:002013-01-17T23:33:43.287+01:00DmC: Devil May Cry ReviewOkay, I just got done playing through DmC for the first time, and I can say, it won't be the last. But I won't get ahead of myself.

Dante is a class A douche, sleeping around, drinking too much, smoking and generally not caring about what anyone else thinks, or about anyone else for that matter. Our protagonist ladies and gentlemen! After a night of all of the above, Dante is rudely woken up by a girl who claims that he is in danger. She doesn't get to say much until Dante is draged into 'Limbo' which is a paralell world where all sorts of evil demons dwell. After a lot of demon slaying in regular Devil May Cry fashion, you beat a boss and gets draged out of limbo. The girl takes you to a masked man who claims to know of your past. And the adventure begins.

As far as the story goes, its not really anything special, it's not bad, but there's really no suprises, not a lot anyway. Not that Devil May Cry has ever been about the story, but they do an okay job, it's not worse than the older games. What makes the story come alive more than in the olds though is the script, the dialouge and the voice actors. Granted, I think Ninja Theory tried a little too much to match the dialouge of the older games, not daring to be more original and creative with the script, but it still works great. At its worst, it's a bit awkward with Dantes weird love for stupid puns, but the rest, the more serious bits are really greatly done. Same goes for the voice actors, they are mostly really really good, at times they too can seem a but awkward but as I've come to expect from Ninja Theory, they mostly deliver greatly.

Okay, now we got that shit out of the way, how about the things that matter? The gameplay, how is the fighting, the jumping and the puzzle-solving. As far as puzzle-solving goes, theres not much at all actually, some but not much. And I don't like that there is close to no backtracking. There's new surroundings all the time, which is nice, but they never become special. These is the thing I am most disapointed about, the puzzle-bit more than the other, but then again, I had a lot of fun without it. The fights are amazingly done, you have full control; if you die, it's your fault, and nobody elses. And I love that feeling, when you die and you feel it's your fault, and when you, as a conequense, win and you know it's your win. And there's a lot to do with the system. For you who were afraid that the moves could not be stoped and changed into another move smoothly, this is as smooth as it gets, both in executing your moves and switching weapons in mid fight. It works like this, you have four main weapon types, the rebellion, witch is for normal attacks, fast and deadly, the heavy weapon, that is slow but all the more powerful, the light weapon which has a wide range but is fairly weak, and the ranged weapons. To use your sword you attack as usual, one button for regular attacks, one for ranged and one for lifts. To use heavy you hold RT (360 version) and then attack, and light you hold LT. Simple and takes only a fraction of a second. It's a joy to fight, never gets dull.

The paths in between fights are not bad either. The platforming is done fairly easy, you can jump and use the light weapon to swing and the heavy to pull objects towards you. It's simple, but is done in many variations, so you don't feel like you do the same jumps over and over again. The surroundig are the second best thing about the game (first is fighting!) and they are beautiful, to move around in and to look at. Especially the dream sequences that Dante has at times.

So what about the new style. I have to say, I don't mind. True it's not as cool as I had hoped but it's still really badass, a lot cooler than the look of the old dante which I still think is a litte out of date. I like the character, he is a douche for a reason, even though I would have liked it if they explored the change he goes through more. The other characters are good to, even though character developement is just for a chosen few. But your partners and the villain is really great. The music really builds to the atmosphere as well, and fits perfectly, some really great pieces in there as well.

Yeah, I really hope for a sequel, develope the characters more, get deeper into the story, maybe have some really clever turns. But in the end, most of what is good and bad can be argued about, if you don't like the look of the new Dante, you don't and that's fine, but I can't see how you could dislike the game for what it is, with probably the best fighting system right now. For me, this is gold, and the bad parts aren't even so bad, just not as good as the other parts. I will say though that the game itself is not more than 8 hours long, so that is a bit short, but for me who likes to play these kind of games over and over again, I will spend a lot of time with this. Is it a great game, yes, yes it really really is, might not be the best when this year is over, but still it will be up there.
Yeah, this year was awesome game-wise. This year let me see the end of an amazing trilogy, some of the biggest triple-A games of this generation of consoles and some of the greatest underdog indie games ever. But first things first, at the end of my 2011 look back I mentioned a lot of games released 2011 that I didn't have the time to play in 2011 and therefore would do in 2012. Here's that list:

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Started playing, but never got through it
Gears of War 3 Started playing, found it kind of boring
L.A. Noire Played through it, loved it
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Started playing, loved it and will get back to it
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception Started playing, loved it and will get back to it
Portal 2 Played through it, loved it
Rayman: Origins Played through it, one of the best games of 2011
Xenoblades: Chronicles Started playing, will get back to it
Pokémon Black/White Haven't played yet

So there, I kept most of them anyway, even though I didn't play through many of them. But what games did I play in 2012 then? Of the ones I was looking forward to most, actually many. Let's start with Catherine. This was a lot of fun, the script it like nothing I've seen in a game before, really great and backed by great voice actors. The game itself is just as great, and divided into two parts, one where you have to deal with your relationships, and one where you move blocks to get up a tower (the dream stages). Both is equally good I think, so I never find myself longing for either when I'm not there. All in all, one of 2012's greatest with one of the greatest scripts of 2012, beaten by only one, but I'll get to that.
9/10

Then we get to the game that got a real beating from the fans, Mass Effect 3. Why? Well, mostly because the ending is an unsatisfactory piece of shit. Well, kind of, I liked it fine, it was okay, but then again, 'okay' is not good enough when the rest of the game, and the other games, are amazing. So we are left with a really really great game, with a crappy ending. That is still great and emotional game, that had me welling up at least once. Another game did more, but again, I'll get to that.
9/10

This weekend I had some (seven) friends over to play Diablo III, again, a great triple-A game that took a lot of heat due to overloaded servers and errors. I played it once the heat on the servers where down and I think this is a great game, definitely a worthy successor to the second game, even though I prefer the old one. But still a great game and done with great care.
9/10

Of the other five games I mentioned looking forward to, four was not released and one I have only begun playing. But DMC: Devil May Cry will be released tomorrow, Bioshock Infinite and South Park: The Stick of Truth later this spring. I feel like I have given up hope on The Last Guardian ever being released though, but I hope, although probably not this year. As for Resident Evil 6, well, you might get a review in time. All I can say after playing roughly two hours is, well.... it's not a great game but I'm having fun enough.

So what other games of 2012 is worth mentioning. How about Lollipop Chainsaw. This is in my opinion one of the best games this year, I game that I actually played through no more than 4 times, to get all the collectables and achievements. And I was not once bored, it has a simple gameplay with enough variation to keep one occupied. And then the story, the jokes and the voice-actors, just great fun. I long thought this would be my game of the year, until... I'll get to that later.
9/10

Dust: An Elysian Tale is one of those games you play and have a lot of fun with when you play it, but as soon as you're done with the game, you don't feel like playing it again. Ever. And yeah, it got a bit monotone, towards the end, but I would still say that it's worth a look, because I still had a lot of fun with it, and it looks amazing, just like... I'll get to it later.
8/10

Fez is brilliant in the way it takes the game out of the TV. I sat with a plain sheet of paper, completely gray with scribbles of clues and patterns that I needed to get all of the cubes. I loved that about Fez. But despite all of that, then the game is done it has close to no value in terms of replay other than to get the last cubes that you can't get until then. But it's still a really really great game.
8/10

Okay, so before I get to... what I'll get to later (I'm guessing most of you can guess it) I have to talk a little about the beginning of the next generation of consoles, namely the Wii U. Oh yeah, I've already done that!

http://gamerbloggz.blogspot.se/2012/12/wiiu-thoughts.html

Okay, I'll address the elephant in the blog The Walking Dead... what can I say, I truly believe this game changed, and will continue to change, games as we know them. I mean, Holy God-blessed shit, is there anything this game does wrong. The script can't even be compared to any other game on the market, The way it makes you care about characters that isn't even real, you really feel for every character in this game, and of course especially for little Clementine. This game makes me want to be a parent, have a little daughter, although not in a zombie apocalypse. I'll probably talk more about what makes it so ground breaking, but for now, lets just leave it at this: Game of the year, the game that makes grown men cry their eyes out.

Let's finish of this with what I feel is the games released in 2012 I want to play in 2013, that I didn't have a chance to play in 2012. They are:

Dishonored
Journey
Hotline Miami
Gravity Rush (If I get a Vita)
Halo 4
Assassins Creed III
Botanicula
Far Cry 3
Thomas Was Alone
Dear Esther

See you in 2013... wait, we're already there aren't we? Darn.....BigAssAnvilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13976946938262983111noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-457201608712998951.post-47571494766525413312013-01-14T02:35:00.001+01:002013-01-14T02:35:10.418+01:00Blog update, what's on the horizon.Okay, since I haven't written in a while I thought I would, and let you know what's going on and what you will expect from me a while ahead.

First of all I will do a 2012 look back, and this fairly soon. Maybe tomorrow, who knows. After that I will also do what I look forward to the most in 2013.

I just finished The Walking Dead... There will be a review and mentioning of it in the 2012 retrospect. What did I think of it? Let me give you a hint... Wow...

I hate Final Fantasy XIII... And I can't get further than the last boss... I hate that boss, it's way to hard and unjust. So I've taken a break from it to play other games, I've played a lot of Fez, Diablo III and have started a playthrough of all the Metroid Prime games. Do they still hold up? I'll get to that too.

Tuesday... The fifteenth of january, that is the date where I pick up the game I've been longing, a little dreading, but after many positive reviews mostly longing, to play, to prove all the non-believers wrong. I am of course talking about DMC Devil May Cry. I still have a lot of faith. Review when I'm done.

And that's about it. If you wan't my oppinion on something, write it, and I'll adress it in some way. Keep on gaming sisters and brothers in games.

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
BigAssAnvilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13976946938262983111noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-457201608712998951.post-83080592026683369772013-01-02T13:31:00.001+01:002015-04-06T19:39:09.098+02:00Final Fantasy XIII - The rant continuesI hate this game. You know, for a game that strives to be fluent and quick, most of the boss fights sure take a long time. I mean, I don't think I have ever had to play this long for one boss, and one try, in any of the Final Fantasy game. At least it didn't feel so long. The duration means that when you die at a boss, after a long and tedious battle (I'm talking at least 15 minutes) you don't have much drive to try again, but in my case, I kind of have to, because if I don't, I have to beat the first stage of the final boss again, and that too is a long and tedious battle. Did you know that the second form, not only has the ability to insta-murder one of your team members, preferly your leader resulting in game over, but when you get near the end of his life, he at times attack you with an attack that not only does as much damage as half your total health points, but it also casts deprotect and deshell, leaving you extreamly weak and easy to kill of. And this shouldn't bother me, I should just go out, fight some bad guys and level up some more, so I can beat him easier, that's logical, right? That's what you usually do in a JRPG, or most RPG's for that matter, when you can't beat a boss, you get stronger and kick his ass. Only THIS piece of rotten garbage of a game decides to put out a bullshit LEVEL BLOCK on my crystarium that they raise at certain points in the game. So guess what, I can't level up more right now, because all my characters are already at their best, which in turn means that I just have to keep trying and trying the same *insert foul word i swore I wouldn't use* strategy until it works. And since every attempt takes FIFTEEN MINUTES, I hope you understand my frustration! I will be sitting here for a good while! That in turn means I HATE THIS ABOMINATION OF A GAME!

And who can blame me? There is no good aspect of this game, that does not have an equally, or worse, flaw. And I can tolerate a lot, I mean I actually loved Final Fantasy XII, which I know not many fans did. But this piece of shit? Just take the crystarium for example. Here we have a system for leveling up, where you spend points to proceed to the next node which gives you either more HP/strength/magic or an ability. And since you don't really have a choice as to where you can go and only can proceed to the next node this was like something done automaticly in other games called leveling up! Now instead I have to guide my light and spend my points, witch takes me away from the game. But that is a minor complaint, because the fact that you can't develope your characters as you want to is a huge flaw. I really feel like none of the characters are special, I feel no need to play through the game with different characters because they're kind of the same anyway. Besides, you don't get to pick your team until the last part of the game anyway.

And don't think I'm done, when I've played through this game and managed to kill the boss, I will be back, I haven't even scratched the surface of the hardened cow manure that is Final Fantasy XIII.

Despite my efforts, stupid luck is the only thing that matters in this game... I am at the final boss(es) and just to be clear, I am going to try and keep the SPOILERS to a minimum, but won't make any promises. Did I know when I went after the end boss that his second form has an attack that insta-KO's one of my characters? Nope, but I sure found out, and having no idea at all that it could be a good idea to equip some sort of ward against it, I died a lot. And this wouldn't even be a problem in my opinion, if I didn't get game over every time my leader dies. That is nothing but bad design, reducing the battles from somewhat strategic to mostly luck.

You see, the thing about the fighting system is that you are often more lucky than skillfull playing this game. I can go into battle with a hard boss and lose, go at him again, same strategy, and win. And I hate that feeling, because I feel no sense of responsibility. It's not my fault that I lost, and I don't feel that I had any hand in winning either.

And I don't want my victory to depend on what characters I'm using or my equipments special abilities. Why can't the characters be more alike, more flexible to evolve as I like them to? But I'm getting ahead of myself, because I'm not done ranting over this game, because it deserves every harsh word. So why do I even play it. Well, look at my top 100-list and see if you can spot a pattern, especially the top 10. What can I say, a fan's gotta do what a fan's gotta do.

Well, I'm going to bed, tomorrow's my birthday, hopefully I will get through this rotten piece of shit of a game then, and then the rant will continue.
Irrational games releases the cover art for Bioshock Infinite. It looks like this.

My thoughts are exactly like this: Shit, that's a really bad ass cover, bold move to have the burning flag in the background. The more I saw it, the more I loved it. I love how the man on the cover looks tormented, I love the colours. It's a great cover. Well, as usual, I don't think the same as every other gamer. An uproar of complains started to spread on the internet, It's too generic was the main complaint, and that they thought that the cover would show more of the political aspects of the game. I guess the subtleties in the cover didn't reach out to people as it did me. But okay fine, If you don't like it, it's your opinion, and everyone is entitled to one.

Later Ken Levine, who is one of the driving forces behind Bioshock Infinite, explained that the cover was not meant to appeal to the hardcore gamer, they are going to buy the game whether the cover looks bad or not, because we really only care for the game itself, as we should. The covers was for the gamers who knew little of the game, the gamer who only buys three games a year, the gamer who would feel compelled to buy a game where the cover features a bad ass holding a shotgun. And I bought that, I got that, because I realize that the industry is not only for us hardcore gamers, but for all kinds of gamers.

But then, I don't know what happened, but they buckled. They said okay, let us give you an alternate cover. It's sort of the same deal as with the Mass Effect ending. I mean come on, have some creative dignity! Don't change your work because others think you should, hold firm to your believes. I hated that Bioware decided to change the ending, even if it sucked, doesn't mean the game did, it was great actually.

Still, the cover thing is not even close to being the same thing, they will keep the old cover, but just have two covers so that you can change if you didn't like the other. It's a smart compromise, but I still feel like developers listen too much to the fans. To some degree it's good, but you can't start doubting yourself over it, and unfortunately I see it all the time. Because, and I mean no offence when I say this, but most fan critics doesn't know shit about what they're talking about. And when you listen too much to them, you get Resident Evil 6, you get Final Fantasy XIII-2, you get Halo 4 (I will get to all of these in time). Games that thinks they're improving on the things that are wrong with it, but are really just forgetting the real problems.

But I digress, in the end, we got six covers to vote on and the winning
cover looks amazing, even better than the first one, so no harm done
there. But I feel at time that we need developers that don't
second-guesses themselves. Because when the professionals start to turn
to only players for advice, the industry will begin to decline.
